Last Tuesday we hosted another edition of the successful Voice Training Workshop at our premises. This dynamic session was conducted again by Ms. Dolly May, Voice & Communication Skills coach, from The London School of English, member of the Chamber.
As Ms. May explained, every language has a specific way of pronunciation with unique features which might help to identify the nationality or background of the speaker. However, when it comes to actually putting it into words it can turn out to be a very tricky issue for non-native speakers to deal with. Catching the accent of a language is not easy even when you have been learning the language for a long time. The challenge is not only about sounds, but also stress and intonation. This master class gave attendees the opportunity to learn how to improve their accent with a practical lesson supported with expert advice.
Participants had the chance to work on key aspects that helped them enhance their English speech, such us rhythm and melody. They learnt how to dominate these features by using voice and language, which are basic elements to boost communication skills at all levels.
Further to this, they also gained valuable tips to improve their overall speaking skills. As in every language, it boils down to highlighting the significant part of speech, namely, the words that hold the essential meaning. You can trap your audience by combining pitch, volume or length to spotlight the key words in your talk. Particularly, when it comes to polishing your discourse, pauses are significantly important. It is always useful putting in halts and stops around ideas, usually after a key word, as a way to emphasize the most important thoughts.
Attendees were really proactive and shared their own experiences about learning how to shape their tone. As Ms. May said to conclude the session, the secret is to keep up the practising. Once the knowledge is gained, results can be noticed rapidly with a bit of training.
We would like to thank The London School of English, Ms. May and of course all attendees. We hope you have made the most of this Voice Training session.
If you missed it but would like to take part in the next one, keep an eye at our UPCOMING EVENTS SECTION. We are planning more exciting activities, which will include additional voice training workshops. Do not miss this opportunity to sharpen your English!
