FeSTeLõn: The Festival of Spanish Theatre, London, is an independent initiative designed to promote cultural exchange between Spanish theatre companies and London audiences.
It was founded in 2013 by Mariví Rodríguez Quiñones, a lecturer at King’s College London, in response to the lack of Spanish theatre being performed in London.
Since it was founded, the Festival has brought theatre companies from Spain to London every year, giving them the opportunity to reach new audiences. Many plays have had their UK première at FeSTeLõn.
Over the past seven years, FeSTeLõn has been growing and gaining more of a presence in London. A survey we conducted in 2017 revealed that 15% of our audience use a language other than Spanish or English as their native language, so our audience is quite diverse. The use of surtitles enables Spanish theatre companies to perform in their native language and means that everyone who is interested in Spanish theatre, regardless of their level of knowledge of the language, can enjoy the productions, including those who are hard of hearing.
