{"id":34145,"date":"2026-04-16T09:52:52","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T08:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spanishchamber.co.uk\/?p=34145"},"modified":"2026-04-16T11:30:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T10:30:52","slug":"the-2026-local-elections-a-critical-juncture-for-the-uk-political-landscape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spanishchamber.co.uk\/es\/2026\/04\/16\/the-2026-local-elections-a-critical-juncture-for-the-uk-political-landscape\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2026 local elections: A critical juncture for the UK political landscape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0local elections across councils in England, as well as the Scottish Parliament and\u00a0Senedd (Welsh Parliament), on 7<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0May 2026\u00a0represent\u00a0a pivotal moment\u00a0for the UK\u00a0Labour\u00a0Government.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These elections are widely viewed as a referendum on\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0Sir Keir Starmer\u00a0MP\u2019s leadership.\u00a0This follows\u00a0a difficult period\u00a0for the Prime Minister,\u00a0marked by challenging\u00a0parliamentary\u00a0by-election losses in Gorton and Denton (February 2026) and Runcorn and Helsby (May 2025),\u00a0alongside\u00a0low\u00a0polling\u00a0numbers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Where are there local elections in England?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Voters will head to the polls for 96 councils across England, all 32 London Boroughs, and two new unitary authorities in Surrey\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0a key part of the government\u2019s ongoing devolution agenda. Simultaneously, the devolved nations will decide the future of their respective parliaments in Edinburgh and Cardiff.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Initially, the government cancelled elections for 30 councils across England\u2019s districts and counties, as elections for new authorities are taking place in 2027. However,\u00a0following\u00a0Reform UK\u2019s legal challenge to the cancellation of elections,\u00a0the government\u00a0was forced into an embarrassing U-turn. This means many more councillors are now up for re-election,\u00a0likely exacerbating\u00a0Labour\u2019s losses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The political outlook<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Labour<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Labour\u00a0is expected to\u00a0struggle\u00a0in these elections. This includes areas\u00a0in which\u00a0they are currently strong,\u00a0such as London, Birmingham, and Cambridge, which will be particularly\u00a0damaging\u00a0for the party.\u00a0Labour\u00a0is\u00a0in a tough position \u2013 it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">finds itself squeezed by insurgent parties on both flanks: Reform UK on the right and the Green Party on the left.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the Government has\u00a0attempted\u00a0to pivot toward the right on issues like immigration to\u00a0retain\u00a0voters, this tactic may alienate its urban, left-leaning base<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0The\u00a0Green Party\u2019s victory in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election in February and polling showing significant losses to the Green Party\u00a0solidifies its threat to\u00a0Labour.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A poor showing in May could lead to intense internal pressure on Sir Keir Starmer\u00a0MP, potentially calling his leadership into question.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conservative<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is also expected to be a difficult night for the Conservatives.\u00a0The party\u00a0has\u00a0not\u00a0regained\u00a0momentum\u00a0since\u00a0the last General Election\u00a0and\u00a0has\u00a0failed to\u00a0prevent\u00a0Reform UK being\u00a0viewed\u00a0as the\u00a0primary\u00a0alternative on the right. It suffered\u00a0greatly in\u00a0the county council elections in May\u00a02025\u00a0and\u00a0this will\u00a0likely be\u00a0replicated\u00a0this year. Whilst headlines will\u00a0likely focus\u00a0on\u00a0Labour\u2019s\u00a0poor results, Kemi Badenoch MP, Leader of the Opposition, will also come under more pressure if the Conservatives suffer heavy losses\u00a0locally.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reform UK<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reform UK is likely to be the big winner\u00a0on\u00a0election night.\u00a0It\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0top\u00a0of the national polls\u00a0almost since\u00a0Labour\u00a0took office in\u00a0July 2024, and\u00a0performed\u00a0strongly\u00a0in May 2025.\u00a0It\u00a0took control of 10 councils and won two mayoralties in England, which is\u00a0extremely impressive for a new political party.\u00a0It\u00a0will look to\u00a0capitalise\u00a0on\u00a0its\u00a0electoral momentum to continue to\u00a0s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">olidify\u00a0its status as the dominant force on the right.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Green Party<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Greens have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">capitalised on dissatisfaction among younger, urban, and left-leaning voters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0under\u00a0Zack Polanski\u2019s leadership\u00a0since September 2025<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Buoyed by a great\u00a0victory\u00a0in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election,\u00a0the party\u00a0will\u00a0aim\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to make deep inroads into safe Labour council seats. The Greens will\u00a0benefit\u00a0from an electorate increasingly willing to use local\u00a0elections\u00a0as a protest\u00a0vote\u00a0against the incumbent government.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Liberal Democrats<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Liberal Democrats, the UK\u2019s centrist party, also has a strong record in local elections.\u00a0The\u00a0party\u00a0has\u00a0been extremely effective over the last few years at\u00a0mobilising\u00a0local\u00a0support\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0MPs are\u00a0very involved\u00a0at a local level.\u00a0It\u00a0will look to\u00a0consolidate\u00a0its\u00a0support in councils it currently\u00a0controls, and\u00a0win\u00a0votes\u00a0in others\u00a0by\u00a0capitalising\u00a0on\u00a0Labour\u00a0and the Conservatives\u2019\u00a0unpopularity in the Southwest of London, Surrey, and further to the Southwest of England.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Implications<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The results of these local elections will have implications at a national level:<\/span><span
